Obama Targets Iran

April 10, 2010

Now that the healthcare bill is out of the way, President Barack Obama has set his sights on Iran. The Islamic Republic was the main topic under discussion when French President Nicolas Sarkozy made his first visit to the White House. Obama wants the United Nations’ Security Council to adopt sanctions against Iran very soon and Sarkozy has pledged his full support. ‘We will make all the necessary efforts to ensure that Europe as a whole, engages in the sanctions regime,’ said the French President.

The problem at hand is Iran’s alleged attempt to make nuclear weapons. Although Washington has failed to provide any evidence to prove the allegation, the Obama Administration seems hell-bent on moving ahead with the sanctions raising parallels to the previous Administration’s obsession with Saddam, Iraq and its ‘weapons of mass destruction’. Iran claims that its nuclear ambitions are purely civilian oriented; evidence from the UN nuclear watchdog so far supports this claim and no diversion from this activity has been noted.

So the problem really is that Iran could develop nuclear weapons. However, theoretically any country with ongoing nuclear programs can develop nuclear weapons, so the actual problem is the perceived instability of the nation as a whole having the capability to develop nuclear weapons.

Why President Obama feels the need to act on this matter with such urgency is unclear at the moment. The only obvious thing is that Obama seems to be annoyed with Iran’s lack of enthusiasm to find a solution to the problem diplomatically. Given the fact that they have not demonstrated any aggressive moves with their nuclear development, the Islamic Nation cannot be blamed for their stance. At the moment this seems to be a case of “guilty until proven innocent”.
