Obama Grants Federal Aid to Virginia for Hurricane Irene Recovery Efforts

August 29, 2011

It was only a few days ago when Virginia was hit by Hurricane Irene leaving destruction in its wake as it made its way up north and has made its way into Canada. President Obama, in an effort to assist recovery efforts in Virginia, has granted federal aid to both local and state governments as per requests made by the state’s Governor, Robert F. McDonnell.

Almost 22 localities in Virginia have been known to suffer extensive damage, and statistics reveal that the damages amount to almost $ 39 million, thanks to the loss of public property and the need for an emergency response to the hurricane.

But that was not all: Obama also offered the Hazard Mitigation Assistance to state and local authorities so that they could prepare for any future disasters that might take place in any of the Virginia localities in the coming days.

The Governor was happy with the prompt response by FEMA (and Obama) and expressed his thanks for the financial aid offered but said that they would request for additional assistance once the assessments on the damage caused was complete.

Among the counties that will receive this federal aid, some of them include York, Sussex, Essex, Isle of Wight and Lancaster among others. Cities such as Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and Suffolk apart from others will also receive this federal aid.

According to FEMA, this isn’t the final list of localities that will receive aid as an evaluation is going on while the governor is still yet to ascertain the damage costs to individuals and based on which he will decide whether he should ask for more federal aid or not.
